Origins

Before Fiorentina as we know it was founded in 1926, there were several football teams in the city. The two strongest and most important were: Club Sportivo Firenze, a multi-sports club founded in 1870 with a football section active since 1908, and Palestra Ginnastica Fiorentina Libertas, a club founded in 1877 with their football section founded in 1912. The two teams played in the Second Division championship, but in 1923-24 the Club Sportivo Firenze were relegated to the Third Division, while the P.G.F. Libertas maintained their place in the second tier. In the summer of 1926, Marquis Luigi Ridolfi desperately wanted to bring about a merger between these two teams in the city to create a new stronger club that could represent Florence on a national level. A fourth-place finish achieved by PGF Libertas at the end of the 1925-26 season guaranteed the newly created Associazione Fiorentina del Calcio their place in the 1926-27 National First Division championship.

((In the pictures are the two kits; the “Whites” of Club Sportivo Firenze and the “Reds” of Palestra Ginnastica Fiorentina Libertas during their final season 1925-26))

NOTE: This was the “Adjustment Season” that gave life to Serie A and Serie B. The teams were divided into two groups: the winners of each would play in the final for the Scudetto with home and away legs. Those who finished from first to eighth place were admitted to Serie A; teams placed from ninth to fourteenth place in Serie B. The last two teams would finish in the third division. At the end of the season the rules changed and an expansion of A and B was decided: All those in 9th place and above went in A, and all the others in B.

Fiorentina, who were sixteenth in the standings, would start the following campaign in Serie B.

It was put into place by Marquis Ridolfi as a sign of change, to put an end to the numerous tensions existing in the club’s committee between the members of the two original clubs that merged to become Fiorentina. Purple officially became the new color of Fiorentina; a purple shirt with a red lily embroidered on the heart. This symbolised the deep bond between the city of Florence and its history.
